چکیده

Chitosan and its oligosaccharides, which are known to possess multiple functional properties, have attracted considerable interest due to their biological activities and potential applications in the food, pharmaceutical, agricultural and environmental industries. Many researchers have focused on chitosan as a potential source of bioactive materials in the past few decades. This review focuses on the biological activities of chitosan and chitooligosaccharides based on our and others’ latest research results, including hypocholesterolemic, antimicrobial, immunostimulating, antitumor and anticancer effects, accelerating calcium and iron absorption, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and Angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activities and so on, which are all correlated with their structures and physicochemical properties. The bioactivities summarized here may provide novel insights into the functions of chitosan, its derivatives or oligosaccharides and potentially enable their use as functional-food components and

Antimicrobial effect of chitooligosaccharides produced by chitosanase from Pseudomonas CUY8.

The aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial effect of chitooligosaccharides prepared by chitosanase from Pseudomonas CUY8. Antimicrobial activities of different degrees of deacetylation (DD) and polymerization (DP) of chitooligosaccharides against various species of bacteria and fungi were measured. The antimicrobial effects of chitooligosaccharides compared with chitosan and chi...

tert-Butyldimethylsilyl O-protected chitosan and chitooligosaccharides: useful precursors for N-modifications in common organic solvents.

An efficient and chemoselective procedure for preparing highly organosoluble 3,6-di-O-tert-butyldimethylsilyl (TBDMS)-chitosan and chitooligosaccharides is reported. The selective modification of the chitooligosaccharides with 0.50 degree of N-acetylation was achieved by using TBDMSCl as the reagent in combination with DMF/imidazole. These protocols yielded partly TBDMS-substituted chitooligosa...

Background and purpose: Chitin is one of the main components of crustaceans’ exoskeleton. Chitosan is produced by deacetylation of chitin. Molecular weight and degree of deacetylation play important roles in biological activity of chitin, chitosan, and their derivatives. So far, various derivatives of chitin and chitosan are obtained. The purpose of this study was to prepare derivatives o...

Chitooligosaccharide and Its Derivatives: Preparation and Biological Applications

Chitin is a natural polysaccharide of major importance. This biopolymer is synthesized by an enormous number of living organisms; considering the amount of chitin produced annually in the world, it is the most abundant polymer after cellulose. The most important derivative of chitin is chitosan, obtained by partial deacetylation of chitin under alkaline conditions or by enzymatic hydrolysis. Ch...

Mechanism of anti-angiogenic activities of chitooligosaccharides may be through inhibiting heparanase activity.

Metastatic disease is the primary cause of death for most cancer patients. Angiogenesis is the formation of a new capillary network from pre-existing vessels and required for tumor vasculature. Heparanase, a beta-endoglucuronidase, assistants tumor invasion, metastasis and angiogenesis. Chitooligosaccharides (COS) is obtained by hydrolysis of chitosan. COS has been proved to be anti-angiogenesi...
